Going Down Chris Campanioni 9780989519113 Books

Chris Campanioni, the author of Going Down is a contemporary renaissance man. He is first of all a writer, but also a teacher, an actor and a fashion model. I listed writer first because Going Down is his journey of discovery that he is above all a writer and we as readers get to accompany him on that journey
Going Down begins with our protagonist, Chris Selden, having just graduated from college and somewhat adrift, reluctantly accompanying a friend on an interview with a modeling agency in New York. In short order Chris is booking modeling jobs. Being urged by his father to get a "real Job," Chris also interviews with the Newark Star Ledger and is hired as a sports reporter.
As readers we get to accompany Chris on his adventures as a model/actor and a reporter. Campanioni's expert use of narrative language and vivid descriptions make you feel that your are not just reading about his exploits, but experiencing them with him. As you get further into the book you begin to feel as though you are his friend and not just a reader. By the end of the book you are just as invested in his future as he is.
I highly recommend Going Down and am looking forward to future novels from this extremely talented young author.

Going Down Chris Campanioni 9780989519113 Books Reviews

Campanioni writes with a frank, open, engaging style, with great narratives, vivid descriptions, lots of action, and numerous flamboyant characters. Readers will still be captivated by his insights into the world of fashion and the life of a male model -- an extravagant world everyone dreams of but few ever enter. Campanioni presents a written montage of stills of the life a young man who graduates from college and is at a loss as to his next move. Despite his own inertia, the protagonist, Chris Selden, somehow falls into the worlds of journalism, fashion, alcohol, drugs and sex. We follow the protagonist as he literally dons and sheds skins provided for him as he makes stabs at understanding and acquiring a sense of self identification in terms of family and persona- especially his race and ethnicity. The term ‘love the one you’re with’ comes to mind as this reader witnesses Selden’s chronic emptiness and desire to find something more fulfilling than being showcased on a billboard. The protagonist struggles with recognition of his physical being when his emotional and spiritual workings are yearning for a deeper and more real existence. A must read.
This book is an AMAZING read!!! It flows very nicely!! The story will grab you right from the start and keep you in its grasp until the very end. I STRONGLY recommend this book to any fans of pop culture, reality TV, the worlds of male modeling and high fashion, as well as fans of the Soap world!!! My own favorite All My Children features in the story lol. Buy this book, you won't be sorry. I once read an interesting story about how singles were released at Motown in the 60s, would you spend your last money on a sandwich or on this record? Well in this case book, and my answer is on this book!!!
For an intelligent literary person (and a newspaper reporter) to penetrate the world of fashion and modeling must be rare. So,reading Campanioni's work is a bit like receiving telemetry from a sophisticated space probe sent to an alien world. The experimental styles of different chapters is like switching between sensory modalities. Campanioni's style shows a love of reading and writing, playfully experimental, with a tip of the hat to other daring writers like William Burroughs. It will be interesting to see more from this author.
Interesting narration of a young man lost in the facade of modeling and the equally shallow world of media as his career bounces back and forth between work as a newspaper editor and a male model/actor. You can see Chris Seldan lose his moral compass as he finds nothing in his life is as it appears, and he begins to lose his grip on reality. Writer Chris Companioni's real-life experience in both fields helps him to shed light on the pitfalls of a contemporary world where depth is in short supply. Can't wait to see his follow up to GOING DOWN.
I just finished reading Going Down by Chris Campanioni. It was an excellent read and I recommend it to anyone that wants to enjoy a well written story. I was surprised at how introspective Campanioni’s work made me feel. The story is about a recent college graduate, Selden, with a degree in Journalism that suddenly finds himself with a successful career as a male fashion model. While the reader may not be able to personally identify with the fashion world there is much in Selden’s story that are shared experiences a mother’s advocacy and admonishments, a father’s grousing and support, friends that have a huge impact on your life and then disappear, other friends that stay in your life longer than they should, co-workers that become important touchstones, and lover’s that are toxic. Campanioni manages to - through Selden’s journalistic eye - make us re-live parts of our own lives. The writing itself has a rhythm. Sometimes a single sentence tells an entire story and other cases a paragraph reads like a poem. If you are feeling nostalgic and want to take new point of view on your own story then this is a great novel for you. I highly recommend it.
